Annual Checkup + CanLiv #2 (2010-02-28)

Tue (2/23) I went to MD Anderson for my liver cancer checkup. Same tests as before – CT scan, chest x-ray, blood work. Wed (2/24) and Thu (2/25) reviewed with doctors. Results were excellent! No signs of metastic/recurring cancer. No new masses found.

This was my first "annual checkup". Previously I had been going for 6-month checkups. But with my last checkup in Feb 2009 I made the "5-Year Mark" in remission, and so began yearly checkups. In May 2010 I will be 6 years cancer-free! The doctors at MDA said typically after 7 years in remission, they declare one basically "free from cancer". So I plan to have my next checkup in Feb 2011. And hopefully that will be my "7-Year Mark"!

Also some exciting news …

Some may remember my earlier blog-post (2008-02-22), where I mentioned my medical oncologist at MDA had formed a national foundation (CanLiv) specifically about cancers of the bile ducts, gallbladder, and liver. At that time, my medical oncologist had also left MDA for a position on the East coast.

On May 7, 2010, CanLiv will hold their first annual Biliary Track-Gallbladder Cancer Research Symposium near Washington DC, and I was invited to attend. I was excited to be asked, and I said yes … definitely … I would like to attend! I recently made my reservations, and plan to arrive few days early and see the local sites, and then attend the symposium. I’m really looking forward to attending the symposium, and in helping and participating in any way I can.

The CanLiv website has more info about their foundation, and the upcoming symposium:

Well, as I reflect over these past 6 years, my life has really changed since my diagnosis of cancer in 2004. It’s been like a second-life, and each year I’ve survived I become more determined and focused as an advocate in the fight against cancer – with a desire to help raise awareness and offer support and hope for those affected by cancer.

I thank you all for being a part of my continuing journey and reading my stories. Until next time, keep the faith alive! And my hope and prayer is that in my lifetime, we will see a cure for cancer!
